The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are fighting for a separate Tamil state - which they call Eelam - in northeastern Sri Lanka.They control most of the Jaffna peninsula, where they run their own administration, and are active throughout the rest of the northeastern province.
Most major towns in the northeast are held by government forces, including Amparai, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Vavuniya and Mannar. Most main roads are also controlled by government forces (although not necessarily on every day of the week), but elsewhere control is much less clearly defined.
